Trekking in Mongolia

Do you want a routine holiday with the same old attractions and things to do, or would you rather go trekking in Western Mongolia for the experience of a lifetime?

They say you have to lose yourself in order to find yourself, and an exciting eco friendly trek through some of the most sparsely populated regions of Asia is a good place to start.

If you took a trekking trip on your own it would be very difficult and nearly impossible to enjoy yourself. However, when you choose Bear Valley Adventures you get to tour with native nomadic people that have lived their entire lives in this remote area.

This part of the world has some of the most breathtaking scenery on the planet. It is raw nature at its finest. The Altai mountain region lies between Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Russia, and China, and you will enjoy unspoiled nature in all its splendour. You can read about trekking in Western Mongolia in books and online but this is an experience that you must live in order to appreciate.

Why Trek in Western Mongolia?

There are many reasons to choose a trekking adventure in this remote region, for example:

? Personal attention – Do you like to travel in small groups as opposed to large and impersonal guided tours? With Bear Valley Adventures, you can choose a small tour group that provides the best experiences. In fact, you can customize a tour just for your group.

? One-of-a-kind adventure Ð You won’t find normal roads, highways, or houses, in the region. In fact, it gives one the chance to think and reflect on life without all of the normal distractions. Once you enter a world without civilisation, a whole new universe can be seen and appreciated.

? Live a nomadic existence Ð Have you ever wondered what it was like to live a nomadic life? When you tour with the Kazakh you are with an ancient people with nomadic lifestyles that go back many generations.

? A safe journey Ð your tour guides are trained in first aid and will be there to make sure that you have a safe vacation. Also, when you have an experienced guide, you are far less likely to encounter difficulties while trekking.

Make sure to prepare and pack properly for your trekking adventure. Remember, once you get out in the wilderness, there might not be any signs of civilization for many kilometres. Even in warm weather you should bring warm clothing along with summer clothing, as the weather can change and is often quite cool in the evenings. After the month of September, the weather can turn cold, and you should bring clothing for cold weather. Rain can come up suddenly, so make

sure to pack rain gear.

Invest in a quality pair of hiking boots for your trip and make sure to break them in beforehand. This will prevent you from getting blisters or sore feet, which can spoil your vacation. Contact Bear Valley Adventures before your trip if you have any questions on supplies and clothing. They will be more than happy to talk to you about your needs and provide advice on what to pack. Have a great journey!

Why Bear Valley Adventures?

Real Adventure

A "tour" with Bear Valley Adventures is a true adventure. You never quite know what is going to happen.
Sometimes, our horse trekkers will have sunshine for most of their trip - at other times, you might have to battle the elements and find out exactly why the locals wear lots of thick furs and heavy felt clothing. (If you have a look at the "About Us" page, you'll see a picture of Rick modelling just how to wear fox fur...)
The local wildlife is another unpredictable factor - you might get the chance to see a wild eagle soaring above the steppes or hear wolves in the distan... or have a fox attempt to raid your food supplies in the middle of the night when you're on a trek!
It's human and horse against the elements, rough, raw and ready - just the way an adventure ought to be.
However, we take safety seriously, and we always do our best to make sure that we have a trained first aid specialist with every tour (and hot showers and real coffee for when you come back to base).

Sustainable Tourism

Bear Valley Adventures is sensitive in the forms of transport we use to get around the steppes.
The last thing we want to do is to destroy the wilderness we love by damaging it through excessive use of technology. Where appropriate, we'll use 4x4 vehicles, keeping to established trails to minimise damage to the local steppe environment.
At other times, we'll use the same sort of sustainable transport that the locals use: the tough little Mongolian horses and camels.

We also work in partnership with the local people, and a lot of the profit made by the tours goes into improving the local community, especially in the areas of health and education, while still preserving and encouraging their traditional nomadic lifestyle and values.

Watch Some of Our Best Adventure Videos

Want to see what you're in store for if you sign up for any of Bear Valley Adventures' great trips? Our videos will give you a brief glimpse of the expanse of the Mongolian steppes that our horse treks cross (although a mere video doesn't do them justice and you really have to go there to experience the full impact of this vast wilderness). Want to see just how big a golden eagle is compared to a human and how these huge birds of prey hunt alongside people? Want to get an idea of just how big the fish are in this part of the world? Don't believe that a city slicker from Australia can master some of the impressive feats of riding that the locals have perfected? We hope that our videos will whet your appetite for the sort of adventure that only Bear Valley Adventure can offer.
